1098-T

Here's helpful information and appropriate resources to help guide you through the 1098-T process. If you have specific questions regarding your personal tax filing and the 1098-T, contact your tax professional.

The 1098T form is a tax form GMercyU is required to file with the IRS for each eligible student.  The institution has to report a form for every student that made a payment towards qualifying tuition and related expenses (Box 1), and/or students that have received scholarships or grants (Box 5) within that tax year.

Qualified tuition and related expenses are tuition, fees, and other related expenses that are required for an eligible student to be enrolled and attend the University. Any payments made within the tax year towards these items will be shown in Box 1.

Payments included in Box 1 can be any payments for qualified tuition and related expenses paid by cash, check, credit card, debit card, and/or loan money. Please note, if you pay qualified tuition or related expenses with a loan, the tax credit is counted in the tax year when the loan funds are disbursed to your account, not the year that you get the loan or repay the loan.

If all of your qualified tuition and expenses were paid entirely with scholarships and grants for that tax year, you may not receive a 1098-T.

Non-Qualified Expenses (not included on 1098-T):

  • Room and board
  • Transportation/Parking
  • Athletic Fees
  • Medical expenses (including health insurance)
  • Personal, living or family expenses

All 1098-T forms will be available by January 31st. GMercyU uses a secure third-party vendor, Heartland ECSI, to process and house our student's 1098-T forms. The University does not have copies of these documents.

The forms will either be mailed to the address we have in our system at the time the form is processed, sent electronically (if you have signed up for this option), or you can log onto ECSI's site to download a printable copy.

If you would like to print a copy of your 1098-T from ECSI, please click here and follow the directions to print your 1098-T tax form (PDF).  If you have already created a profile with ECSI, you can start on page 5 and follow the directions from there.

If you are having any issues with their system, please call Heartland ECSI at 866-428-1098 or you can use the live chat option as well if help is needed to navigate their site.

GMercyU will mail your 1098-T Form to your home address as listed in our system as of the January the forms are prepared. If you have recently moved, please make sure to update your address on the Registrar’s webpage, through the Change of Name/Address Form.
